Things have got pretty bad up there this afternoon. The new Adventure park is apparently toast and Westmoreland has been evacuated. Lots of smoke around even here in Riccarton. I took this from the end of the road an hour and a half ago. It's even worse now. Feel sort of sick. :(

This is something more like seen in a developing country, surely we have the resources to put this out? People's lives are at stake.

That is bloody scary!! thoughts are with everyone in Christchurch, stay safe down there.

Surely there's a big retardant bomber in Oz that could be hired/loaned to come get some decent firepower to battle this

Isn't Oz battling it's own bushfires though?
That must be pretty scary down there, keep your head down and stay safe anyone out there.

Scary photo Grant.

We had some similar trouble up my way earlier in the week but it didn't look anything like that.
On the plus side it was a chance to see/hear an Iroquois overhead again.

As for dropping fire retardant. Can Fletchers do that?

You might be right there actually. Other parts like where our daughter is are flooding :S

Maybe when/if they replace the C-130's with C-17s they should keep one and convert it for fire bombing

When you get to that level of dry and that level of fire load it doesn't take much to become a disaster

Hope all are staying safe. The best place to be in those conditions is somewhere else

On the workbench:

One hell of a mess

Yeah, it's been very hot and dry lately. This stuff happens even in developed countries as the experiences in California and Australia attest. Unfortunately it looks like it has now crossed into Victoria park and across Dyers Pass road. I wonder what the morning will bring.
