Gary - when I checked last week, it was US$14.99 to send a single large set of German tool clamps, and that was the slower shipping option. Your own printer will be awesome, just need to sort the files for items to print. You need to invest in a 3d scanner too
Grover - maybe in 10-14 days? Give anyone else a chance to get in on a group buy a bit of time to sort what they want, and get funds together. Also hoping Shapeways might have a discount on shipping offer sometime soon (Have seen them offer a substantial discount in the past)
For anyone doing 28mm figures you should check out this site
it's pretty awesome software and a great example of how far web technology has come. I am horrified at how much minis cost these days but the STL files aren't too bad. I'd love a local copy of the software though.
I've had stuff from Shapeways and I can only say good things about them.
I've also seen some stuff done on the resin printer I'm after and it's pretty good, my current PLA printer is still considered fairly high end at 50 microns on the Vertical. The resin printer will do 30 microns on vertical (Z) and 50 or the X plane where as the PLA printers are still normally only .75/50mm so fairly grainy..
I doubt the home market printers will get near the $400K printers that Shapeway currently use for a long time, but they are a long way from the early PLA and ABS types and even most of the modern ones.
