Need to make a shelf/bench sorta thing you you find in a garage
I'm thinking to build it from balsa wood then somehow...age it?...so it looks older. Or just to darken it with a darker brown.
I'm worried if I just paint it would I lose the texture of the wood...
Any ideas/suggestions for something super easy?

I'd use evergreen styrene sheet, or if you really want to use wood, get basswood rather than balsa. Balsa is too soft and fluffy.

You could try staining the wood with tea.

Or fuming it with ammonia. Don't know how much tannic acid is in Balsa. May not work well/take a long time.

(edit) Both balsa and basswood are open grained woods. Expect a lot of blotching/uneven stain effects.

I also suggest Basswood not Balsa. You can get a good worn effect by painting it and then lightly sanding through the paint in places.
